What Is a Printer?

A printer is a computer peripheral that turns digital data into hard copies, typically of text and graphics on paper or 3D objects. Printers are widely used by business and home computer users. Printers are also used for scanning and faxing documents, and as a means of creating digital copies of physical objects.

The first electronic printer was a dot matrix printer, which created characters by striking pins against an ink ribbon. Each pin made a dot, and the dots formed the character. Dot matrix printers were followed by daisy wheel and line printers, which produced characters in a chain or on a continuous track, respectively (similar to a typewriter).

Modern printers use laser technology to print images or photographs on paper. These printers can be set to print in color or black and white, and some can produce a wide range of different colors. Printer resolution — the sharpness of printed images — is often measured in dots per inch or dpi, and is higher for color printers. Most contemporary printers can print at speeds up to 600 dpi for sparse office documents, but lower for dense images.

An inkjet printer is a more recent development, which prints ink droplets onto the paper, giving it an attractive sheen. It is more expensive than a traditional printer, but it can produce high-grade color prints and produces less waste. The printers can be connected to computers, mobile phones and other devices that support the Bluetooth protocol, which allows them to communicate with these devices.
