A printer is a device that takes data from a computer and prints it on a piece of paper or sheets. There are many different types of printers, from the cheap ones that can print a few pages a minute, to the high-quality expensive printers that can print photographs or complex documents in color. A number of people have been credited with the invention of the printer, but Charles Babbage invented the first mechanical one for use with his Difference Engine in 1822. More recent inventions include the inkjet printer and 3D printing devices.
A 3D printer works by depositing melted polymer in thin layers over a build platform. The polymer solidifies very quickly, bonding with the layer underneath before the platform lowers and the print head adds another layer of material. This process can take minutes to days to complete a full print, depending on the complexity of the model.
The most important thing is the quality of the software that drives the printer. It is important to remember that “garbage in, garbage out” – even the best printer can produce poor-quality results if the driver software is badly written or incorrectly configured.
