What Is a Printer?

Printer is a peripheral device that replicates the data displayed on a computer system on a physical medium such as paper. It is one of the most popular computer hardware output devices that is used to generate hard copies of documents that contain either text or images. There are many different types of printers that are available for use and some of them can be classified based on their connectivity provisions such as wired or wireless.

Some of the common uses of printer include printing letters and cards, preparing project reports for work or school, and printing photos. It can also be used to print tools or parts that are needed for a specific project at home or in the office. In the pre-digital age, people would often take their film rolls to a photo lab to get their pictures printed. This is the same as how the printer function is used today.

The earliest printers were hammer-driven systems where precisely timed hammers struck against the ribbon to produce characters on the back of the paper. The most famous example of this is the IBM 1403. Other variations included chain and train printers where a set of character slugs traveled across a bar that passed horizontally past the paper, and rotary printing presses that embossed characters onto the surface of the paper using a cylinder.

Today, the most commonly used printers are laser and inkjet printers that use toner or ink cartridges to create prints. They can be connected to a computer through a USB cable (wired) or via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (wireless). They are also available in 3D versions that can print three dimensional physical objects.
