Printer is an electronic device that accepts text files or image data from a computer and prints them to paper or other material. Printers are widely used by both individuals and businesses, and a variety of printing technologies exist.
Printers can print either text or graphics, and they can produce either black-and-white or color images. They can connect to computers via dedicated data cables like USB or wireless options such as Ethernet or WiFi. They can also function independently with the help of memory cards or other portable storage devices.
Most modern printers are capable of processing four types of data: a string of characters, a bitmapped image, a vector image, or a computer program written in a page description language such as PCL or PostScript. Some older printers can only handle one or two of these modes.
The most important printer characteristics are resolution (in dots per inch), speed (in pages printed per minute), and color capabilities. The most common printers are laser printers, inkjet printers, and thermal printers. Laser printers use a laser to attract toner to areas of the paper; inkjet printers spray a jet of liquid ink; and thermal printers selectively heat regions of speciality finished papers to create monochrome prints.
The introduction of the first low-cost laser printer in 1984 and the inclusion of PostScript support in the next year’s Apple LaserWriter set off a revolution in printing known as desktop publishing. With these machines, users could produce simple printing tasks such as fliers and brochures at quality levels once possible only from expensive commercial typesetting systems.
