A printer is a device that converts digital text and images into physical copies, using printing technologies like inkjet, laser, dot matrix or thermal printing. The printer connects to the computer via a wired or wireless connection and prints documents according to instructions sent from the PC. Printers can be divided into two categories, impact and non-impact. Early impact printers worked something like an automatic typewriter, striking an inked impression on the paper for each character printed. More recent non-impact printers are much faster and more versatile. Laser printers, for example, work by projecting an image on a drum that is covered with toner. A laser or LED light then melts the toner onto the surface of the page itself, which is transferred onto a sheet of paper when the drum is spun.
