A printer is an auxiliary device connected to a computer which prints documents, usually in the form of text or images. It can be used to print on paper or other materials such as plastic. It can be connected to the computer using dedicated data cables such as USB, or wirelessly via a short-range radio (such as Bluetooth) or by a local area network using Ethernet or WiFi. Printers can also be operated independently, without a connected computer.
A common printer type is the laser printer, which uses the non-impact technology of photocopy machines to print text and graphics onto a sheet of paper or other material. It uses high-voltage circuits to give electrical charges to certain parts of the printer, particularly a selenium drum called the “photoreceptor” which is coated with powdered ink (“toner”). The laser beam strikes the toner and transfers it to the paper, leaving a hard copy of the document.
Other printer types include dot matrix printers which use a series of pins to print characters (the earliest had 7 or 24 pins). Daisy wheel printers, which were popular in the early home computer era, are similar. More recently, inkjet printers have become very popular and can print multiple pages quickly.
Many different manufacturers produce printers, and most offer a wide range of features to suit individual needs. One of the most important considerations is how much resolution the printer can handle. The higher the number of dots per inch, the better the resolution and clarity. Some people also like to have a multifunction printer which can do other things besides printing, such as copying or scanning.
