A printer is a peripheral machine that makes a persistent representation of graphics or text, usually on paper. It prints soft copy by accepting input commands from users on the computer system.
Printers vary in size, speed, sophistication and cost. They may be non-impact, like the old dot matrix printer that used to be popular in offices, or impact, which uses a key to make an impression on a plate for each printed character. Non-impact printers include laser printers, which use a laser beam to attract dry toner to an area of the paper; ink-jet printers that spray a jet of liquid ink; and thermal printers that transfer wax-based ink onto the paper with heated pins.
The name comes from the Latin verb docus, meaning “to write.” Document is also the word for an official record, such as a birth certificate, passport or driver’s license. A document can be an official form, or it can simply be a piece of paper that shows something happened, such as a phone call to a company about a problem with an order.
Some printers can also function as fax machines, which are useful for sending physical documents to other locations that do not have digital forms. However, they can only do this if the other location has a fax machine. It is important to have the right type of paper in the printer, and to carefully load it into the device to avoid paper jams. It is also a good idea to keep extra ink and toner cartridges on hand. It is important to remember that although printers are typically more reliable than in the past, they can still break down at inconvenient times.
