What Is a Printer?

A printer is a device that accepts text or graphic output from a computer and prints it on standard-size sheets of paper. Printers vary in size, speed, sophistication and cost.

Most modern printers can print in both black and white and sometimes color. Most have a USB port for connecting to computers, but they may also connect to a wireless network using cables (such as Ethernet) or short-range radios like Bluetooth, or on a standalone basis without a computer, by reading data from a memory card. The resolution of most modern printers is measured in dpi(dots per inch).

Traditionally, printed documents were written by hand or typed on a keyboard into a word processor. The earliest mechanical printers worked somewhat like a typewriter, with each key producing an inked impression on the paper for a single character. The invention of movable type in China around 1000 AD made it much easier to create printed texts, and a thriving trade developed in Europe for “journeyman printers” who traveled from town to town with their tools of the trade and produced books and other writings as needed.

More recently, inkjet and laser printers have become the most common types of printers. These printers use an electrical charge to vaporize wax embedded in the ink drum. The resulting melted ink is then dropped onto the paper. Laser printers are often preferred for printing images or photos, since the ink does not smear or fade with time.
