What Is a Printer?

A printer is an electronic device that accepts data from a computer or other information source and transfers it to a physical medium such as paper. It can be connected directly to the computer or indirectly through a network.

Printers are divided into two main categories: impact printers (in which the printing medium is physically struck) and non-impact printers (in which the writing medium is stationary). Among the latter, dot matrix, dot-emulsion, and solid-ink printers are most common.

The most basic printers are designed to create text or graphics on a single sheet of paper. They use a printhead, which is a small array of pins that emerge from a metal plate or other housing to form characters.

There are a few different types of printing technology, including inkjet and laser. Inkjet printers are generally faster than laser printers, but they can produce lower-quality output.

Inkjet printers use a toner cartridge to transfer ink onto the surface of paper. Toner is deposited by a small jet of ink that is fired from the top of the printer head.

The most important part of a printer is the print head, which picks ink from the cartridge and places it on the page. The print head also communicates with the software on the computer and controls printer settings. Other parts of a printer include the paper support and the output trays.
