Types of Printers

A printer is a hardware output device used to generate hard copies of any document. It accepts input commands by users on computers or other devices and prints the document onto paper. Printers are available in many sizes, shapes and models. Some of the more common types include toner-based printers, liquid inkjet printers and dye-sublimation printers.

Printers are rated for speed in pages per minute (PPM). Higher PPM ratings mean that the printer can print more pages in less time. Additionally, some printers are capable of printing in multiple colors while others only produce black and white documents.

Prior to Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable type in 1440, printing was done by hand or by expensive typesetting systems. Gutenberg’s printer allowed mass production of text and graphics in high quality.

Early impact printers worked something like an automatic typewriter, with a steel typebar striking an inked impression on paper for each character. This method required careful timing to ensure the correct impression was made on the paper for each printed character. Inaccuracies could result in characters being misaligned on the page, appearing slightly above or below other printed characters.

Laser printers use high-voltage circuitry to give electrical charges to a selenium-coated drum. A laser beam then scans the drum to create an electrostatic image, attracting a dry powder called toner that adheres to the paper. Laser printers are able to print in full color or monochrome. Liquid inkjet printers use tiny droplets of liquid toner to create images and text. Dye-sublimation printers use heat to diffuse solid dye into the medium to which they are being printed, producing vibrant and colorful documents.
