A printer is a device that transfers data from a computer to a physical medium (paper or film). There are many types of printers, and they are used for a wide variety of purposes.

Steganography
Ink printers are also capable of a form of steganography, which is the “hiding” of encoded information within an image. This is particularly useful for personalizing pre-printed cards, such as customer and membership cards, sports tickets and public transportation season tickets.
Printers can also be used to encrypt information on paper, such as security documents and legal paperwork. Printed documents can include an encrypted serial number, date and time stamp.
A printer can be connected to a computer by wired connections, such as USB cables, or via Wi-Fi. They can also be used to print directly from a digital camera or a mobile phone.
