Types of Printers

A printer is a device that prints documents and pictures from a computer or other electronic device. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and capabilities and are used in many different settings, including home and office.

The type of print technology that a printer uses is important for its speed, quality and permanence of the document. Inkjet and laser printers are the most common types of printers, but there are many other options available.

Dot matrix and line printers use a moving printhead that contains wire hammers to form characters on paper. These systems are generally referred to as drum, typebar or chain printers.

Inkjet and laser printers use jetted ink to print text and images on paper. These devices have become more common over the past few years.

These systems have several advantages over their predecessors, including lower cost and faster speeds. However, they are less durable and may not work well with certain types of media.

They are also limited in the amount of ink that can be used, and their printing is slow. In addition, they are not compatible with speciality papers such as photo or glossy papers.

Printer drivers translate instructions from the operating system or application software into a format that the printer can understand, such as PCL (HP’s printer command language) or Postscript.

A printer driver can be installed manually from a disc provided with the printer, or can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. Once installed, the driver can control various aspects of the printer, such as setting margins, determining how much space to leave between each page, and controlling the amount of ink that is used.
