Types of Printers

A printer is a piece of equipment that takes text and images from a computer and puts them on paper. They are common in homes, schools, and businesses. Some printers are black and white, while others can print in color. They are complex pieces of technology that use a lot of complicated parts and software to work correctly. They can be expensive to purchase and maintain, especially if you need to buy a lot of ink or toner for them to function.

Inkjet printers use liquid ink sprayed from tiny nozzles onto the page. They can print high-quality color prints and are very versatile. Laser printers use a drum with an image that is made of toner (powdered ink) and a laser or LED light is shone over the drum in the outline of the desired image. The toner is attracted to the areas that are positively charged on the drum and a series of rollers transfers the toner to paper. This process creates an indistinguishable image on the paper and is very fast.

Chain or train printers use a set of character slugs on a chain or track that travels horizontally across the page. They are slower than dot-matrix printers, but they can print vertically aligned characters. They are commonly used in cash registers and ATMs.

Solid ink printers were devices manufactured solely by Xerox that had fantastic print quality and the highest print speeds. They used crayon-like wax, which melted and was projected onto the page.
