Types of Printers

The printer is a peripheral machine that makes a durable representation of graphics or text, usually on paper. The first mechanical printer was invented by Charles Babbage for use with his Difference Engine in the 1800s. Today’s printers are computerized and can print any data that is sent to them. This could be simple text for office documents or complex vector or pixelated images like photographs or maps.

There are many types of printers and each type has different uses. They also differ in cost and speed. Some types of printers are more expensive than others, but they can produce higher quality prints. The type of printer a company chooses should be based on the types of documents the organization is printing.

Inkjet printers print documents by ejecting or spraying drops of liquid ink onto the paper at high speeds. This prints thousands of dots to create a digital image or text. Laser printers, which are typically used in offices, are non-impact devices that don’t strike the paper with pins as dot matrix and daisy wheel printers do. Instead, they use a laser beam to draw an image on a selenium-coated drum. A roller then rolls over the drum to transfer a charge to the paper. As the paper is rolled off the drum, toner sticks to selected areas of the image and is fused to the surface of the paper by heat and pressure.

Plastic card printers can be used for time attendance and access control, photo personalization of customer and member cards, or in public transport systems to produce personalized tickets and passes. They can also be used to produce national ID cards, which need to be secure and durable.
