Types of Printers

Printer is a peripheral device that replicates the contents seen on your computer screen onto a physical material like paper. It prints text, graphics, and images by using information received from the computer system through the print driver. The main function of a printer is to deliver the files and documents that are created with word processing software programs or other computer applications.

Depending on the type of printer you have, there are many different types of printing processes that occur. The most common type of printer is an inkjet, which uses an ink cartridge that contains a reservoir of ink to produce the desired image. A laser printer, on the other hand, uses an electrical charge to draw a document on a selenium-coated drum. The resulting picture is then rolled in toner, which sticks to the areas of the drum that are positively charged and repels the areas that aren’t. The toner is then fused with the paper to create a printed page.

Other types of printers use impact or daisy wheel technology to produce characters on a page. Dot matrix printers, which were invented by IBM in 1957, utilize pins that impact a ribbon to imprint dots on listing paper, similar to how a typewriter works. Daisy wheel printers use a series of rotating wheels to print characters. The first daisy wheel printer was developed by the Digital Equipment Corporation in 1970.

3D printers, which were developed by Xerox in the 1980s, work by extruding a polymer through a print head that is heated until it liquefies and then depositing thin layers on top of each other to create three dimensional objects. The process takes minutes to days depending on the complexity of the object.
