A printer is a machine that produces a permanent representation of text or graphics on various materials including paper. There are different types of printers for many different uses, ranging from printing bar codes to high-resolution photographic prints. There are two main categories of printers: impact and non-impact printers. The impact printers (also called dot matrix, line matrix, or daisy wheel) produce text and images by striking a ribbon with tiny wire pins and then pressing the resulting marks on the paper. The non-impact printers (also known as laser or inkjet) use nozzles to spray tiny drops of liquid ink on the paper.
Most modern printers use one of the four printing technologies: laser, inkjet, thermal or dot matrix. The print technology dictates the cost, speed and quality of the printed material. The printer driver is the specialized software that bridges the language gap between the client and the printing technology; it tells the printer how to turn your digital file with all its squiggly lines into a physical document with all its minuscule dots.
The most common types of printer are laser, inkjet and thermal. The monochrome (black) laser printer uses just one cartridge of ink or toner. Color printers add cartridges for cyan, magenta, and yellow. A photo printer is a color printer that can match the color range and resolution of photographic film. Dot Matrix and Daisy wheel printers are less commonly used but still available for specific applications. Some thermal printers are capable of producing colors by selectively heating regions on special heat-sensitive papers.
