A printer is a hardware output device that replicates the contents of a computer system on a physical medium, most commonly paper. It is connected to the system via a USB, or other wired or wireless connectivity provision. It accepts commands from the computer to print and also sends back confirmation of successful printing.

These devices create replicas of objects that are sent to them from a computer-aided design system in a file format called STL (stereolithography). This is a cross-sectional view of the object, which is then printed layer by layer using a heat source and a UV light.
