How to Use a Printer

Printer is a hardware output device that bridges the digital and physical worlds by transforming electronic data into tangible documents and images. Printers are widely used at home and in the office for everyday tasks like printing school assignments, photos or documents.

Printers can print a wide range of files, from text documents to pictures and even 3D objects. Depending on the type of printer, it can also provide other services such as scanning and copying. This versatility streamlines different tasks and reduces the need for additional devices.

The most common printers today are inkjet and laser models that connect to a computer via a USB cable or Wi-Fi. They can produce a high-quality output and are suitable for most home and office uses. The print quality can be impacted by the paper, cartridges and other variables such as temperature or humidity.

Before starting to print, make sure that your printer is connected to the same network as your computer and is in working condition. Open the document, picture or other file that you want to print in Finder or another app. Then, choose Print from the file menu. If your printer has multiple options, select the printer that matches your needs and edit other settings, such as the number of copies to print or whether to use double-sided printing.

Dot matrix impact printers, a popular choice in the 1970s and ’80s, work by creating letters and images using pins that print on an ink ribbon over the paper (like a typewriter). The most modern printer technologies are non-impact printers which print dyes and resins directly onto a plastic card. This method allows for high-quality prints that are less affected by interruptions on the card surface such as smart chips or ridges caused by internal RFID antennae.
