Choosing a Printer

A printer is a peripheral device that prints out the contents seen on the computer system on a physical material, which is usually paper. The printing technology used by the printer can differ greatly and affect its size, speed, cost, quality of print and noise level.

Some printers are capable of producing color images while others are limited to black and white. The most common types of printers include inkjet printers, laser printers and solid-ink printers. The latter is becoming increasingly popular as it uses a single cartridge containing black, cyan, magenta and yellow ink or toner. In general, solid-ink printers are less expensive to operate than the earlier color and monochrome models.

The type of paper a printer can print on is also important. Most modern printers can use any standard office paper but some require special inks and papers. The print resolution is another factor, which can be measured in dots per inch or dpi. Higher resolution is generally required for text and graphics.

Other important considerations when choosing a printer are its connectivity provisions and the ability to support different media sizes. The former is particularly critical for businesses, where high volumes of printed content are typically produced. The printing process can also be accelerated when the printer has an optional duplexing unit, which doubles the output speed. Some printers can even be connected to the network via wireless connections like Bluetooth, VLAN and wifi. This makes them convenient for home and business users alike.
