In computing, a printer is a peripheral machine that makes a persistent representation of graphics or text, usually on paper. While most output is human-readable, bar code printers are an example of an expanded use for the device.
There are a wide variety of print technologies available. The choice of technology has a significant effect on the cost and operation of the printer, as well as on the quality and permanence of the printed documents.
When choosing a printer, the first thing to consider is its speed. The speed is measured in terms of pages per minute (PPM) and can be based on various factors like whether the print is black and white or full-page, or if it is a laser or an inkjet printer.
Another important factor is the resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer the text will appear. The most common resolution is 300 dpi, while some printers can print at much higher resolutions, up to 1,200 dpi or more. To print high-resolution graphics, a high amount of printer RAM is needed.
Printers can be connected to computers in a few different ways, including via USB cable or Wi-Fi. The type of connection determines how the printer will communicate with the computer. The most common types of printers are inkjet and laser printers.
Other types of printers include dot matrix, chain or train, and band printers. Dot matrix printers come in both chain and train varieties, where the characters are arranged either in a linked chain or on a set of track-traveling “slugs.” A band printer prints a set of character slugs on a flexible steel band that runs horizontally past the print head. This is sometimes used for personalized plastic cards, such as customer and member cards, or in local public transport systems to produce season tickets.
